Halfway to a year!

Our little babe is 6 months old! We took him to the Doctor last week and he is 28 inches long (90th percentile) but only weighs 16 pounds 3 ounces (23rd percentile). Long and lean. He is so much fun. He is rolling all over the place, back to front and front to back. He gets up in crawling position now but has yet to make any attempt to actually crawl. Gabe sits up well on his own and is so much more engaged with the world around him. The other day he looked at me and said "Mom." I don't think he had a clue what he said, he was just making noises but it made my day! Gabe loves being outside and has become very social, particularly with other kids. He reaches out and touches their faces and gets very excited when he sees them playing. In the morning when I am getting ready for work he loves to sit next to me in front of the mirror and play in my makeup bag. Jon says that habit has to stop when he gets a little older but for now it is pretty cute. He eats solids really well, thanks to a trick Jon does, and still loves nursing. When I get home and pick him up he gets a really big grin and starts sucking on my face. He is a happy little guy and we feel so lucky to have him in our lives.

The only downside to him turning 6 months old is that we have to decide whether or not to separate his two little toes that are webbed on both feet.

We have a consultation scheduled with a plastic surgeon, which is beyond bizarre for me to even think about, but we want to know what our options are. Jon is really worried that he will get teased if we don't do it but neither of us is too keen on the idea of him having surgery so to help us make a decision we are putting it to a vote. There is a poll on the side of the page, let us know what you think!

Hey, wow so fun to see your Gabe! I always new you had good taste:) He is adorable, and I say yes to surgery...in the long run he will thank you, I think. But it is a hard decision.

I didn't want to vote because I don't know what to do, that's a tough choice. Let me tell you from experience, going through a surgery of a child is one of the hardest things you'll do. Yes surgery is safer today then any other time and his surgery would be a simple one. But any time they're put under, there's a risk. Find out what your options and pray about it. I know it sounds like a scapegoat but honestly if you go through it you'll need the Lord's support so make sure HE's on board before you begin. Gabe is darling and will be darling with or without the srgery. GOOD LUCK, glad we're not in your shoes! Keep posting, we love reading up on you guys. We'll call this summer for a playdate!

i say no :0)

its not an impairment to his walking and i dont think its that noticeable (so i dont think the teasing thing will be an issue) - and im with the above comment that i wouldnt want to put my baby 'under' for any reason unless it was really serious. PLUS then he can match his cousin dawson (hehe)

besides when he has to stand up a million times and tell people "whats something that people dont know about you" he can say he has webbed toes :0)

but i will love him either way :0)

i LOVE that first picture! i know a couple people with "webbed" toes and nobody made fun of them. it just made them more unique.

Congrats on the six month mark! Don't they grow up so quickly. I know it sounds so cliche, but it's true. If you remember Josh and Jodi Kennedy, their little boy has a webbed toe too. I think it is more common then most people realize. Is it something that can be taken care of later in life? It might just make him stand out from the crowd. My advice doesn't matter. Just consider all your options and decide what you think is best. You're good parents, and I know you'll do what is in little Gabe's best interest.

Holy Cow he is beautiful. I had no idea you had a baby. Shows what a lame friend I am. I just found your cute blog. I miss you! Come and visit us on our blog any time and see what is new with our family. It is altaehales.blogspot.com. The one that you looked at was abandoned because it got to hard to write about that stuff. By the way I love webbed toes. I say they should stay. Love you tons.

Mariel, Gabe is adorable! One of my friends in church saw me on your blog and she asked how I knew you....Stacey Pallfreyman, funny world..anyway, Gabe is really cute, and as a side note, I say no to the separation - it could be his signature. Love

Gabe is growing up so fast! He is such a cute punkin! This may be a little late, but I have a friend who has webbed toes and I asked her if she wishes she had had them separated. She said definitely not. The risk of surgery was not worth it, and they have never bothered her. But I didn't ask her if she was very popular in junior high, so she may not be a reliable source...
Either way, good luck!

Mariel,

I am so glad you found me - trust me you are not a blog stocker. I think one of the wonderful things about blogs is that they connect people that would otherwise not see each other. Your little boy is darling. My sister says hi too! I hope all is well.
